 Our County

Ross County was founded in 1798 and was home to Ohio's first capital, Chillicothe; it is named for the Federalist Senator James Ross of Pennsylvania. The county has a total area of 693.02 square miles, making it District 9's largest county in terms of area. In addition to Chillicothe, the principal communities include Adelphi, Bainbridge, Clarksburg, Frankfort, Kingston and South Salem.

Along with its many cultural, historical and recreational resources, Ross County is home to the Hopewell Culture National Park, often known as Mound City, where archaeological evidence of the indigenous Hopewell people is abundant in earthworks and burial mounds.

 Our Work

In each county, the highway maintenance workforce is comprised of highway technicians (HTs), auto technicians and office personnel. The HTs are the most visible of all ODOT employees, as they are the ones who are seen clearing the state highway system of snow and ice during the winter-weather months. In addition to this and responding to emergencies as needed, county maintenance crews perform other operations throughout the year, including:
  • Guardrail installation and repair
  • Pavement repair and resurfacing
  • Culvert replacement and drainage cleaning
  • Vegetation control, mowing and brush cutting
  • Litter control
  • Sign installation and pavement marking repair
The Ross County maintenance facility is located on Larrick Lane, just off C.R. 550 and adjacent to U.S. 35 at Chillicothe. The state highway system is comprised of 10 state routes and two federal routes; they include S.R. 32, S.R. 28, S.R. 41, S.R. 104, S.R. 138, S.R. 159, S.R. 180, S.R. 207, S.R. 327, S.R. 372, S.R. 772, U.S. 23 and U.S. 35.
