 Project Description

During the 2020 construction season, ODOT will construct an “RCUT” intersection at S.R. 32 and C.R. 58 (Shyville Road) in Pike County, eliminating the at-grade intersection and traffic signal. In doing so, left-turn lanes will be constructed to the east and west of the existing intersection, and traffic movements to and from Shyville Road will be limited to right-in/right-out only turns. A contract is scheduled to be awarded in the spring of 2020, with construction beginning in the summer and continuing through the fall.

 What is an RCUT?

Used on high-speed, rural, four-lane divided highways, a Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) is a non-traditional intersection that can ease traffic movments and enhance safety. In an RCUT, side-street (minor cross street) traffic is prohibited from turning left or traveling straight through the mainline intersection. Instead, motorists on the side street will turn right onto the mainline and do a legal U-turn at a nearby crossover. In addition to allowing for a more efficient movement of traffic, RCUT intersections reduce the total number of conflict points, thereby limiting collision opportunities and, most typically, the severity of such collisions.

 Why build an RCUT?

Also known as J-Turns, Restricted Crossing U-Turns (RCUTs) allow for U-turns in designated crossovers on a mainline route. An RCUT-style crossing is a cost-effective measures that reduces the number of vehicle-vehicle conflict points, reduces the number of turning and angle crashes, and simplifies driver decisions. In comparison to signalized intersections and interchanges, construction and maintenance of RCUTs are less costly, easier to maintain and provide a more efficient movement of traffic on the mainline route.
