 Our County

Scioto County was founded in 1803 and named for a Native American word referring to deer or deer hunting. The county has a total area of 616.15 square miles, and in addition to its county seat, Portsmouth, some of the principal communities include New Boston, Otway, Rarden and South Webster.

Scioto County is home to Shawnee State Forest and Park, Ohio's largest at more than 88,000 acres. Many prominent or famous musicians, sports figures and political leaders hail from Scioto County, and it is also lends itself to many cultural, recreational and historical opportunities and events.

 Our Work

In each county, the highway maintenance workforce is comprised of highway technicians (HTs), auto technicians and office personnel. The HTs are the most visible of all ODOT employees, as they are the ones who are seen clearing the state highway system of snow and ice during the winter-weather months. In addition to this and responding to emergencies as needed, county maintenance crews perform other operations throughout the year, including:
  • Guardrail installation and repair
  • Pavement repair and resurfacing
  • Culvert replacement and drainage cleaning
  • Vegetation control, mowing and brush cutting
  • Litter control
  • Sign installation and pavement marking repair
The Scioto County maintenance facility is located on U.S. 23, just south of Lucasville. The state highway system is comprised of 15 state routes and two federal routes; they include S.R. 73, S.R. 104, S.R. 125, S.R. 139, S.R. 140, S.R. 239, S.R. 253, S.R. 335, S.R. 348, S.R. 371, S.R. 522, S.R. 728, S.R. 772, S.R. 776, S.R. 852, U.S. 23 and U.S. 52.
