Monroe County is located in the southeastern part of the state on the West Virginia border. State Routes 78 and 556 cross the county east and west, and State Routes 7, 26, 145, 255, 260, 536, and 800 run north and south. The Little Muskingum River flows through Monroe County, and the Ohio River provides its eastern border.
Part of Ohio’s Appalachian region, Monroe County has been called the "Switzerland of Ohio" because of its rugged hills and early Swiss settlers.
Major attractions in Monroe County include Piatt Park; Kiedaish Pont Park; Parry Museum; Ring Mill; Hannibal Locks and Dam; Foreaker and Knowlton Covered Bridges; Fly Ferry; Monroe Lake and Wildlife area; Wayne National Forest; and the Ohio River.
