ODOT Veteran appointed District Deputy Director

New role will lead ODOT District 5, covering seven-county region in east/central Ohio

COLUMBUS (May 6, 2008) - Building on the Strickland administration’s spirit of customer service, Ohio Department of Transportation Director Jolene M. Molitoris has appointed Karl Newman to the District Deputy Director post overseeing ODOT’s District 5, covering a seven-county region in east/central Ohio.

Mr. Newman is currently the Building Construction Superintendent for the district, which includes Coshocton, Fairfield, Guernsey, Knox, Licking, Muskingum and Perry counties. He has been with ODOT since 1989.

"Karl’s commitment to this department and to Governor Strickland’s mission of modernizing the state’s multi-modal transportation system will truly serve the citizens of the District 5 region well," said Director Molitoris. "Karl is a team builder who understands the role ODOT can play in serving the community. His ability to build partnerships - both in the public and private sectors - will promote cooperation across boundaries and encourage new ideas and new solutions."

A career employee with ODOT, Mr. Newman started with the department nearly 20 years ago as a delivery worker, maintaining inventory in the District 5 supply room and stockroom. Rising through the ranks, he has planned major construction projects for the district, managed a $3 million facilities operating budget, and coordinated building projects with the State Architect’s Office.

"In this new role, I look forward to working with our local government partners and the people and businesses of Fairfield, Guernsey, Knox, Licking, Muskingum and Perry counties in fulfilling our mission to provide safer transportation choices and move Ohio into a prosperous new world," said Mr. Newman.

Mr. Newman lives in Pickerington, with his wife and two sons.

Mr. Newman will replace William Lindenbaum, who has served as Acting District Deputy Director since September 2008. "Bill has done a tremendous job, leading the employees of District 5 and serving the people of the region. We are happy he can now return full time to his job as ODOT’s Deputy Director for Construction."

ODOT District 5 is a team of more than 350 employees who work together to maintain nearly 3,255 miles of U.S. and State highways across the seven-county area. The district office is also the direct connection for local communities on state investments in all modes of transportation, including railroads, airports, and bikeways.
