The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), in partnership with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) and Friends of Hocking Hills, is seeking public comment on the proposed SR 664 realignment project located near the entrance of Old Man's Cave in Hocking Hills State Park.

To improve safety and enhance the long-term operations of Hocking Hills State Park, ODNR and Friends of Hocking Hills reached out to ODOT for guidance and recommendations on improving this section of SR 664. A study of SR 664 near the entrance of Old Man's Cave began in 2006.

The proposed 0.8 mile realignment of SR 664 will protect the park’s sensitive resources and improve pedestrian safety at the popular tourist destination by relocating the highway away from the natural gorge and visitor center.

The new alignment will also include improvements to the intersections of Lodge Drive and Culp Road (Benton Township Road 251) as well as a new entrance to the Old Man’s Cave parking area.

Construction is estimated to begin fall of 2011 with an estimated completion date of November 2012. The work will be conducted in a manner that minimizes disruption to traffic and park visitors.

Written and electronic comments will be received until February 22, 2011. Public comments can be sent via email to tony.durm@dot.state.oh.us.
