U.S. Route 250 Reconstruction in Harrison County

US 250 Sign   U.S. Route 250 Reconstruction in Harrison County  (2.4 mile major reconstruction, east of Tappan Lake)
Complete replacement of existing pavement, shoulder, and 11 existing culverts from just east of the former Coultrap’s store to just west of the former Mallernee’s Market. Additionally, existing guardrail and signs will be replaced, and rock channel protection will be added at the culvert outlets.

PROJECT COST:
$4,316,685.00
PRIME CONTRACTOR: Shelly & Sands, Inc., Zanesville, Ohio
START DATE: June 7, 2010
COMPLETION DATE: November 30, 2010

 Work Schedule

  1. Pavement repairs were completed the week of June 7th.
  2. Work began July 21st to replace 11 culverts within the project limits.
  3. Pavement replacement will begin September 7th.

 Maintenance of Traffic

Traffic will be maintained with flaggers until September 7th when the roadway will be closed to traffic for 45 days. During this time, traffic will be detoured onto SR 151 and SR 9.

The decision to close the roadway and detour traffic was based primarily on two factors:

  1. The estimated construction cost savings with a complete closure of 45 days vs. a two-construction season project with traffic maintained is approximately $3.5 million.
  2. Additionally, the traveling public’s exposure to the detour will only be 45 days vs. the inconvenience of a two-year construction project and work zone.

Therefore, it was determined that it is more efficient, cost effective, and safer – not only from a construction perspective but also for motorists – to completely close the roadway and limit the work to a shorter timeframe.

The posted detour will have temporary traffic signals and additional signing installed to accommodate increased traffic on these routes.
