Fort Steuben Bridge to be Closed Later Today for Inspection Work
(NEW PHILADELPHIA, OHIO) --The Fort Steuben Bridge in Jefferson County will be temporarily closed later today to all traffic in order to conduct an inspection of the bridge tomorrow.
This inspection has been necessitated, because of a localized deflection in the bridge deck which was not previously present. This deflection, or undesirable movement under traffic, was discovered today during routine maintenance operations by Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) officials.
ODOT District 11 Deputy Director Dick Bible, P.E. said, "The bridge is being closed to all traffic as a precautionary measure and in the best interest and safety of the traveling public. The bridge will remain closed until the inspection has been completed to identify the cause of the existing condition, and our engineers can determine the exact nature of the problem."
The bridge will be closed early tonight after adequate signs have been posted alerting drivers of the closure and detour onto the Veterans Memorial Bridge or U.S. Route 22.
The Fort Steuben Bridge is currently slated to be removed this fall.
