U.S. Route 40 Closure Delayed Due to Weather
Due to weather, the U.S. Route 40 westbound closure scheduled for next Monday, May 23rd, has been postponed to Tuesday, May 31st.
New Philadelphia, Ohio (Monday, May 16, 2016) – Weather permitting, U.S. Route 40 westbound will be closed to traffic next Monday, May 23rd, 2016, from Pickering Rd. to the State Route 331 intersection as part of the $19.5 million, major interchange improvement project underway at Interstate 70 in Belmont County.
U.S. 40 is scheduled to be closed for 180 days. Traffic will be detoured on I-70 west at Rolling Acres (Exit 215) to the Morristown Exit (Exit 208), then north on SR 149 back to U.S. 40.
ODOT’s contractor, Shelly & Sands Inc., Columbus, Ohio, began work in April on this project to reduce congestion and improve safety.
- Widening of U.S. 40, SR 331 and Hammond Road
- A new connector between existing SR 331 and Hammond Road
- Improved roadway and interchange design
- SR 331 bridge replacement
- Twin bridge deck replacements on I-70 over U.S. 40
- Pedestrian facilities within the project limits
I-70 and SR 331 traffic will be maintained at all times. However, U.S. 40 westbound and various ramps will be closed at different times during construction.
The completion date for the entire project is September 30, 2017.
The Ohio Department of Transportation maintains the state's largest man-made asset – the transportation system. ODOT's mission is to provide the safe and easy movement of people and goods from place to place. As a $2.8 billion per year enterprise, ODOT invests the bulk of its resources in system preservation through maintenance, construction and snow and ice operations.
The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by ODOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated December 11, 2015, and executed by FHWA and ODOT.
