Interstate 77 traffic delays expected next week at Dover
New Philadelphia, Ohio (Wednesday, June 30, 2010) – Interstate 77 traffic should expect delays during nighttime hours next week at Dover in Tuscarawas County as part of the new, $11.4 million interchange construction underway.
Beginning around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 7th, traffic will be reduced to one lane in both directions to allow for the safe erection of new structural steel bridge beams over the interstate for the County Road 80 bridge. Between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., all four lanes of traffic will be stopped in both directions for 15 minute increments.
This work is expected to take place through Saturday morning, July 10th, weather permitting, and possibly into the following week if needed.
No detour will be posted. However, motorists are urged to use an alternate route to avoid delays.
CR 80 was closed to traffic in March, and that traffic is being detoured east on SR 516 to SR 39 east to SR 211 east to Slingluff Avenue in Dover, then east on Slingluff Avenue to North Wooster Avenue, then north on North Wooster Avenue back to CR 80, and reverse.
This new interchange is intended to help relieve congestion at the existing, adjacent interchanges in Dover and Strasburg and promote future economic development in the area.
In addition to this new bridge over I-77, the project includes a new diamond interchange, the reconstruction of just under a mile of CR 80, the replacement of a bridge over the Sugar Creek, and the relocation of Progress Street.
ODOT's contractor, The Beaver Excavating Company, from Canton, Ohio, began work in September 2009, and expects to be complete in December 2010.
ODOT reminds motorists to SLOW DOWN for the "Cone Zone;" turn on headlights and drive carefully in work zones. Drive responsibly for your safety and the safety of the highway workers. Remember, fines in work zones are doubled for not obeying traffic signs. Minimize distractions – turn OFF cell phones in construction zones. Remember to always buckle up.
