U.S. Route 40 to reopen in time for Jamboree in the Hills
New Philadelphia, Ohio (Wednesday, July 06, 2016) – Weather permitting, U.S. Route 40 westbound will be reopened to traffic this Friday, July 8th, just in time for Jamboree in the Hills traffic expected to start rolling into the Belmont County area this weekend.
U.S. 40 westbound was closed Tuesday, May 31st, from Pickering Rd. to the State Route 331 intersection as part of the $19.5 million, major interchange improvement project underway at Interstate 70.
At the latest, officials expect it to be reopened by Tuesday, July 12th.
This closure phase was scheduled for 180 days, but work was expedited to accommodate Jamboree in the Hills traffic.
ODOT’s contractor, Shelly & Sands Inc., Columbus, Ohio, began work in April on this project to reduce congestion and improve safety.
- Widening of U.S. 40, SR 331 and Hammond Road
- A new connector between existing SR 331 and Hammond Road
- Improved roadway and interchange design
- SR 331 bridge replacement
- Twin bridge deck replacements on I-70 over U.S. 40
- Pedestrian facilities within the project limits
I-70 and SR 331 traffic will be maintained at all times. However, U.S. 40 westbound and various ramps will be closed at different times during construction.
The completion date for the entire project is September 30, 2017.
The Ohio Department of Transportation maintains the state's largest man-made asset – the transportation system. ODOT's mission is to provide the safe and easy movement of people and goods from place to place. As a $2.8 billion per year enterprise, ODOT invests the bulk of its resources in system preservation through maintenance, construction and snow and ice operations.
The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by ODOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated December 11, 2015, and executed by FHWA and ODOT.
