Emergency repairs begin on East Liverpool collapsed drainage structure that caused sinkhole on Second Street on-ramp
New Philadelphia, Ohio (Monday, September 08, 2014) – Repair work is beginning today to fix the failed storm sewer pipe that caused a major sinkhole at the end of July and closed the Second Street on-ramp to U.S. Route 30/State Route 39 in the city of East Liverpool.
ODOT’s contractor, Marucci & Gaffney Excavating Co., from Youngstown, Ohio, is starting to saw cut the pavement today in preparation for the replacement of the collapsed pipe.
The pipe under U.S. 30 will be rerouted to tie into the existing drainage on Broadway Street. This requires the pipe size to be increased and manholes replaced along Broadway Street to tie in at East 2nd Street. Following that installation, the collapsed pipe under U.S. 30 will be grouted full and the sinkhole repaired.
Traffic will be maintained with temporary single lane closures on Broadway Street and East 2nd Street. However, the ramp will remain closed until the new drainage is completed. Beginning at the intersection of Jackson Street and the U.S. 30/SR 39 westbound on-ramp, traffic is being detoured west on the U.S. 30/SR 39 westbound on-ramp to the SR 7 south/SR 39 west (Wellsville) off-ramp to West 8th Street, then east on the U.S. 30/SR 39 on-ramp.
Work is expected to begin on the storm sewer next week and include placing new drainage pipe and new manholes.
The cost of the repairs is $550,000. All work is expected to be completed by October 31, 2014.
