Traffic delays ahead this week on SR 7 in Jefferson County
Slope repairs progress between Rush Run and north of Brilliant
New Philadelphia, Ohio (Monday, October 03, 2016) – Traffic will be rerouted and restricted later this week on State Route 7 on both slope repair projects between Rush Run and north of Brilliant in Jefferson County.
On Wednesday, Oct. 5th, SR 7 will be closed from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Rayland and the New Alexandria Exits to allow the contractor time to safely clean the top edge of the slope on the hillside repair project north of Brilliant. Only northbound SR 7 traffic will be able to access Brilliant; there will be no access to Brilliant from southbound SR 7.
Then on Friday, Oct. 7th, SR 7 traffic will be stopped in 15 minute intervals in both directions at Rush Run between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. while ODOT’s contractor cleans the top edge of this slope as well.
Motorists are urged to plan ahead and use alternate route to avoid delays.
No blasting work will take place at either site until at least Thursday of this week.
SR 7 has been reduced to one lane in each direction on the northbound side of the highway between Rayland and Brilliant since March 2011 due to three separate rock fall events and associated landslides. Altogether, over $68 million has been invested into repairing this hillside and improving the long-term safety for motorists along SR 7 through this area. All four lanes of SR 7 are expected to reopen upon in 2018.
The Ohio Department of Transportation maintains the state's largest man-made asset – the transportation system. ODOT's mission is to provide the safe and easy movement of people and goods from place to place. As a $2.8 billion per year enterprise, ODOT invests the bulk of its resources in system preservation through maintenance, construction and snow and ice operations.
The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by ODOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated December 11, 2015, and executed by FHWA and ODOT.
