Holmes County Amish Committee Makes Donation for Road Repairs
New Philadelphia, Ohio (Wednesday, October 6, 2010) – The Holmes County Amish Steering Committee, a subgroup of the Amish Safety Committee, donated $50,000 to a Road Maintenance Fund that will help pay for upcoming resurfacing work on sections of buggy lanes along State Route 39 between State Route 515 at Walnut Creek and U.S. Route 62 at Berlin.
Repair work is also planned for SR 515 in front of the Carlisle Inn and SR 39 eastbound between SR 515 and Walnut Creek Cheese. Traffic will be maintained with flaggers.
In accordance with Section 5501.33(A) of the Ohio Revised Code (ORC), any organization, individual or group of individuals may give money to the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) to pay expenses the state incurs in maintaining, repairing or reconstructing state highways and roads upon which animal-drawn vehicles travel.
"This is the fourth time we've been able to apply these monies to the roadway since this section was established in the ORC during ODOT's 2004-2005 Biennium Budget process," said ODOT District 11 Deputy Director Richard A. Bible, P.E. "We are thrilled with this partnership and very appreciative of the Amish community's generosity and willingness to assist us with roadway maintenance and repairs this way."
ODOT's Holmes County maintenance crews and Holmes Supply Corp., from Holmesville, Ohio, will begin this work Tuesday, October 12, 2010, and it is expected to take one week to complete. ODOT is also contributing about $50,000 toward this project.
ODOT reminds motorists to SLOW DOWN for the "Cone Zone;" turn on headlights and drive carefully in work zones. Drive responsibly for your safety and the safety of the highway workers. Remember, fines in work zones are doubled for not obeying traffic signs. Minimize distractions – turn OFF cell phones in construction zones. Remember to always buckle up.
