Bridge Deck Replacement Project on I-77 to Begin mid-March
Begins with weekend closure of I-77 north and southbound
GARFIELD HEIGHTS (Friday, February 28, 2014) – The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Ruhlin Company are preparing for major work to begin on the I-77 bridge deck replacement project.
The entire project will replace the bridge deck and improve drainage on I-77 north and southbound between I-480 and Grant Avenue over the Cuyahoga River, SR 17 (Granger Road), Canal Road, CSX Railroad and the Ohio and Erie Canal Reservation. Minor operations began on the bridge during the summer of 2013 to prepare for major work in 2014 and 2015.
Weather permitting; on Friday, March 14 at 7 p.m. crews will close all lanes of I-77 north and southbound between I-480 and SR 21 until 6 a.m. Monday, March 17 in order to implement the phase one traffic configuration. Motorists will be detoured via SR 176 and I-490. All traffic leaving downtown Cleveland via I-77 southbound will be detoured via I-490 westbound to SR 176 southbound.
Also during this weekend closure, crews will implement two ramp closures as part of phase one. On Friday at 7 p.m., the I-77 southbound ramp to I-480 westbound and the I-480 eastbound ramp to I-77 northbound will close until early-November 2014. I-77 southbound motorists will be detoured via I-490 westbound to SR 176 southbound to I-480 westbound. I-480 eastbound motorists will be detoured via SR 176 northbound to I-490 eastbound to I-77.
During construction three lanes in each direction on I-77 will be maintained on the bridge. This will be done utilizing a "Contraflow" traffic pattern. Portable concrete barriers will be used to separate north and southbound traffic while one or more lanes are shifted onto the opposite side of the highway. This configuration allows the contractor to have full access to a safe work zone during all phases of construction.
The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 50 mph during the construction season. This will be strictly enforced by the local police departments.
Overnight lane closures on I-77 north and southbound are expected throughout the duration of the project. Motorists are encouraged to visit the projects website and to sign-up for email updates for all up-to-date information about closures and restrictions.
