Canal Road Bridge in Cleveland’s Flats to Operate One-Way Only
New traffic pattern to begin Monday, November 16
CLEVELAND (Tuesday, November 10, 2015) – Crews on behalf of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) will soon implement a new traffic pattern for Canal Road motorists in Cleveland’s industrial Flats. On Monday, November 16 Canal Road will operate as a ONE-WAY northbound roadway between West 3rd Street and the East 9th Street Extension.
Southbound traffic will be detoured via the East 9th Street Extension, Broadway Avenue, and I-490. Those bound for West 3rd Street should exit at West 7th Street and use Quigley Road to West 3rd Street. A map of the detour is below:

From May - November 2015, a temporary signal has been maintaining one lane of two-way traffic on the bridge, however due to the amount of traffic, crews have been unable to time the signal in a way which meets the traffic needs of the area and motorists have become frustrated – often completely disobeying the signal.
The project replaces the now narrow and outdated bridge which carries Canal Road under the Norfolk Southern railroad (and over the CSX railroad), near the intersection of Commercial Road and the East 9th Street Extension in Cleveland’s Flats. The project has seen some delays due to foundations issues which crews are currently working to resolve.
When the bridge is reopened it will carry two, widened lanes (one in each direction) as well as 15 foot sidewalk for pedestrians. This will greatly improve the ability of truck and trailers to enter and exit the Flats.
