I-77 SB between SR 82 & Ohio Turnpike to Close Overnight Friday
Crews will remove the cracked beam on the Valley Parkway overpass
GARFIELD HEIGHTS (Friday, March 25, 2011) – Tonight, Friday, March 25 at 7 p.m., the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) will close I-77 southbound between SR 82 and the Ohio Turnpike in order to remove the cracked beam on the Valley Parkway overpass. Motorists will be detoured via SR 82 and SR 21.
Crews on behalf of ODOT will remove a section of the Valley Parkway bridge deck and remove the cracked beam overnight Friday in order to safely allow all lanes on I-77 southbound to reopen.
Crews anticipate reopening all lanes of I-77 southbound around 12 noon on Saturday, March 26.
Valley Parkway over I-77 will remain closed until further notice. Motorists are detoured via Brecksville, Oakes and Broadview Roads.
Following the removal of the beam, ODOT bridge engineers will reevaluate the structure before making any further decisions about replacing the beam.
Overnight Tuesday, March 22, an ODOT engineer and the contractor working on the Valley Parkway overpass over I-77 southbound noticed a crack in a beam of the structure. ODOT safety crews immediately closed Valley Parkway over I-77 and I-77 southbound between SR 82 and the Ohio Turnpike in order to secure a temporary support under the overpass.
Crews have been performing preliminary work along four I-77 overpasses since mid-March, which includes Valley Parkway. The $3.8 million project will replace the decks of four overpasses in the vicinity.
