I-77 SB between SR 82 and Ohio Turnpike Remains Restricted
Temporary supports under Valley Parkway secured
GARFIELD HEIGHTS (Wednesday, March 23, 2011) – The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is advising motorist traveling I-77 southbound to use an alternate route for their evening commute as I-77 southbound remains restricted to one lane between SR 82 and the Ohio Turnpike until further notice.
Overnight Tuesday, an ODOT engineer and the contractor working on the Valley Parkway overpass over I-77 southbound noticed a crack in a beam of the structure. ODOT safety crews have since secured temporary supports under the overpass in Brecksville.
ODOT bridge engineers’ preliminary investigation of the incident reveals that the crack in the beam is likely to have occurred during the past week. It is possible that a truck with an oddly shaped load traveling on I-77 southbound struck the overpass and the incident was not reported to the Department.
ODOT bridge engineers are currently developing a plan for permanent repairs to the Valley Parkway overpass.
Valley Parkway over I-77 will remain closed until further notice. Motorists are detoured via Brecksville, Oakes and Broadview Roads.
All lanes of I-77 northbound remain open.
Crews have been performing preliminary work along four I-77 overpasses since mid-March, which includes Valley Parkway. The $3.8 million project will replace the decks of four overpasses in the vicinity.
