NEW East 9th Street Extension Opened for Improved Access to Industrial Flats
CLEVELAND (Friday, May 4, 2012) – At 4 p.m. today, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Innerbelt project team opened the NEW East 9th Street Extension.
The final piece of construction equipment was removed from the site, breaking a banner and ceremoniously opening the new Extension to vehicular traffic. While the new East 9th Street Extension is to be used primarily by Flats industry and heavy trucks, the opening of the new Extension comes just over a week before the opening of the new Horseshoe Casino in downtown Cleveland and will provide improved access to parking for gamers, employees and tourists alike.
The new Extension connects East 14th Street and Broadway/Orange/Ontario with Canal and Commercial Roads in the Flats. It is accessible via the I-90 east exit for Broadway Avenue as well as from East 14th Street and Broadway/Orange.
The route replaces the former “Commercial Road Hill.” The previous roadway was narrow, steep and curvy, and only accessible via downtown streets including Carnegie Avenue and Ontario Street – causing congestion and traffic back-ups. The new Extension provides improved access for heavy trucks and commuters alike – all while reducing traffic at heavily traveled downtown intersections.
The roadway consists of two lanes, one in each direction, as well as a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists. The Extension itself provides stellar views of the river valley and Flats area below.
