Crews have reduced lanes at the intersection of Carnegie and Ontario. It is likely that morning rush hour for those who enter downtown via Ontario, and both morning and evening rush hours for those who use Carnegie will be most impacted. Remember: Getting downtown is easy, just allow extra time to enter and exit and use alternate routes when you can – riding RTA and carpooling are also great options. The first phase of improvements should be complete by May 12.
Crews will be conducting milling and paving operations on Orange Avenue and E 14th Street beginning on Monday, April 9 and ending on Monday, April 16. Paving schedules may be adjusted for weather and to provide access during special events. Motorists should expect rough, uneven pavement in these areas until work is complete. Details for this work and other traffic impacts are below.
Monday, April 9, crews will begin milling and paving on Orange Avenue between E9th Street and E 30th Street. During some operations the roadway will be closed. Outbound traffic will be detoured onto I-77 south, where motorists can exit at the E 30th Street exit to continue their trip. Inbound traffic will be detoured to E 22nd Street and Carnegie. Motorists should expect closures and delays until Thursday night when paving is expected to be complete.
Monday, April 9 and Thursday, April 12, Broadway, between E 14th and E 30th, will be limited to local access for U.S. Post Office traffic only during paving operations.
Tuesday, April 10, crews will begin milling and paving on E 14th Street between Carnegie Avenue and Orange Avenue. During some operations the roadway will be closed, with traffic detoured to E 22nd Street. Motorists should expect closures and delays until Monday, April 16 when paving is expected to be complete.

Monday thru Friday, April 9-13, lane restrictions will be in place on E 9th and E 14th Streets under I-90, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Safety Improvements Coming for Westside Motorists: In other news, ODOT recently began planning for a project to make safety improvements to I-90 east approaching the I-71/I-490 interchange which will help improve the flow of traffic for west-side commuters. The I-90 east approach will be reconfigured to provide two, through lanes to I-490 east, two lanes to continue on I-90 east and one lane to I-71 south. Currently motorists in the left/center lane have the option of continuing on I-90 east or accessing I-490 east – from the same lane. This project will eliminate this decision lane and provided dedicated lanes as described.
This configuration will enhance capacity; improve sight distance and drainage; and eliminate the weave which currently impacts motorists entering I-90 east from W 44th Street and exiting I-90 east to W 25th Street. The new configuration will allow for a dedicated lane to those exiting onto W 25th Street. Work is still in the planning phase, but is expected to take place in 2013 with all lanes open and functional following completion of the eastbound Innerbelt Bridge project.
