Innerbelt Urban Design and Aesthetics Subcommittee to Present Draft Recommendations to Cleveland City Planning Commission
Cleveland (Thursday, October 1, 2009) – The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Innerbelt Urban Design and Aesthetics Subcommittee will tomorrow present draft recommendations for aesthetic treatments to the new westbound I-90 Innerbelt bridge and its touch-down points in the Tremont and Gateway neighborhoods to the Cleveland City Planning Commission.
On September 18, ODOT received approval to move forward with the modernization of the Innerbelt freeway - including construction of a new westbound I-90 Innerbelt Bridge - using federal funds.
Earlier this year, ODOT announced that it would direct stimulus dollars in order to quickly advance the construction of the new Innerbelt Bridge using the design-build process. Design-build project delivery combines the design and construction of a project in one competitively-bid contract. This approach allows the state to capitalize on improved project timing, reduced costs, clear quality control and enhanced innovation opportunities.
While the design-build contracting team will ultimately design the new structure, the Innerbelt Urban Design and Aesthetics Subcommittee has been working since June to provide prescriptive comments to be included in the design-build contract including recommendations for lighting, fencing, railings, wall treatments, colors, pavement and under bridge treatments.
