Lake County communities rally volunteers to participate in State Roadway Cleanup as part of the 2009 Great American Cleanup

Garfield Heights (March 11, 2009, 4:07 PM)It’s time for action!  Volunteers across America are teaming up to clean up and improve their public spaces, highways, parks, bike trails and waterways.  Keep Wickliffe Beautiful, Keep Mentor Beautiful, the Lake County Solid Waste Management District and the Ohio State University Extension, Lake County are reminding local communities that ‘green’ starts with Lake County!

“For each of our millions of volunteers nationwide, ‘green’ starts with his or her decision to help clean up any of the hundreds of sites across the country where volunteers work to better the community,” said Mathew McKenna, president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful.  “We’re reminding our friends and our neighbors that ‘Green Starts Here,’ but the impact we have goes beyond our town borders.”

During the 2008 Great American Cleanup, Ohio volunteers collected 5,433,234 pounds of trash, planted 9,418 new trees and collected 576,723 tires for recycling.  In the Wickliffe and Mentor communities alone, over 10,000 individuals participated in Keep America Beautiful events.
