Lakefront West Project has seen great economic and environmental impacts
Cleveland Lakefront West Project began in the summer of 2010 with the goal of connecting
Cleveland's west side neighborhoods with the lakefront by creating multi-modal
connections along the West Shoreway between West Boulevard and the Main Avenue
was completed in phases and included improvements to the Lake Avenue and West
76th Street pedestrian tunnels, the West 73rd Street
extension under the railroad tracks to connect with existing access to
Edgewater Park, and the transformation of the West Shoreway into a boulevard.
these projects increased access to Lake Erie, improved green space, biking and
pedestrian facilities, increased development potential, and simplified
connections along the boulevard.
the Shoreway’s impact on the surrounding areas has seen a large increase with
more than $250 million investment in approximately 1,500 market rate housing
units. Completed projects include Vintage Development’s Battery Park, NRP Group’s The
Edison, and The Shoreway Lofts developed by JRoc.
completion of the West Shoreway project occurred in the late-2017, while
additional improvements and final touches have continued. In mid-May work will
begin in the median to remove dead trees, improve tree planting conditions,
plant 51 condition-tolerant trees, plant 100 trees outside of the median, and
ornamental grasses that are more suitable for the environmental conditions
present. ODOT has hired Davey Tree as a consultant to oversee the planting of
the trees and in partnership with the City of Cleveland and Cleveland
Metroparks. These extra steps will increase the success rate for tree
establishment along the boulevard.
of the entire Lakefront West project, ODOT has planted 16,900 perennials, 2,450
shrubs, and 653 trees outside of the median.
along the West Shoreway are a great example of residents, local government, and
state government coming together to help communities positively transform
economically and environmentally.
