Local communities rally volunteers as part of the 2010 Great American CleanupBe ‘Green’ this Saint Patrick’s Day
Garfield Heights (Wednesday, March 17, 2010) –
It’s time for action! Volunteers across America are teaming up to clean up and improve their public spaces, highways, parks, bike trails and waterways. Keep Lakewood Beautiful, Keep Wickliffe Beautiful, Keep Mentor Beautiful, the Lake County Solid Waste Management District and the Ohio State University Extension, Lake County are reminding local communities that ‘green’ starts with you!
"For each of our millions of volunteers nationwide, ‘green’ starts with his or her decision to help clean up any of the hundreds of sites across the country where volunteers work to better the community," said Mathew McKenna, president and CEO of Keep America Beautiful. "We’re reminding our friends and our neighbors that ‘Green Starts Here,’ but the impact we have goes beyond our town borders."
During the 2009 Great American Cleanup, volunteers across America collected 64 million pounds of trash, planted 157,000 new trees, 2.3 million flowers and bulbs and collected 870,000 tires. Recycled were 6.9 million pounds of electronics, 243 million plastic bottles, and 36 million pounds of newspaper. In the Wickliffe and Mentor communities alone, over 10,000 individuals participated in Keep America Beautiful events.
This year, the Great American Cleanup and State Roadway Cleanup, co-sponsored by the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), will take place Saturday, March 27.
