ODOT Reminds you to Opt for the Alternate! During Innerbelt Reconstruction Work

Avoid Interstate 90 delays by using Interstates 77 and 490

Opt for the Alternate!CLEVELAND (Monday, June 20, 2011) – Beginning overnight Tuesday, June 21, crews on behalf of the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) will be implementing important traffic changes.

Beginning overnight Tuesday, the E 14th Street ramps to both I-77 southbound and I-90 westbound will close and will remain closed through the summer of 2012, or longer. Motorists may access I-77 via E 14th Street to Orange Avenue. Motorists may continue on I-77 southbound to I-490 westbound to I-90 westbound - or - use E 9th or Ontario Streets to access I-90 westbound.

During this initial period, I-90 east and west will generally have three lanes open, however, shortly after the Fourth of July holiday, crews will be restricting traffic on I-90. One lane of I-90 will be closed between Ontario and E 14th Street, and I-90 will be reduced from three (3) lanes to two (2) lanes in each direction.

Along with these lane closures there will also be access changes along this downtown corridor. Shortly after the Fourth of July holiday, motorists will no longer be able to access Carnegie Avenue from I-90 eastbound. Motorists will still be able to access Carnegie Avenue using the alternate route via I-77. This restriction will remain in effect through the end of 2011.

In order to compensate for the temporary closure of a lane on I-90, crews are paving and restriping to add an additional lane on I-490 and I-77 which will serve as the alternate route. Motorists are asked to Opt for the Alternate! and use I-490 and I-77 to avoid these downtown construction zones. Commuters are also encouraged to ride RTA or carpool through OhioRideshare.

Other important traffic changes are coming to routes outside of downtown Cleveland, too. Details will be forthcoming. Log-on to Innerbelt.org or dial the Project Hotline at 216.344.0069 for more information.

In September 2010, the project was awarded to Walsh Construction and designer HNTB Ohio Inc. for a total bid amount of $287.4 million. Using the unique design-build process in which the design and construction of the project are combined in a single contract, the team will complete substantial construction of the new westbound bridge during the fall of 2013 – nearly a year earlier than originally anticipated.

Motorists are encouraged to utilize alternate forms of transportation during the construction of Cleveland’s new Innerbelt Bridge including Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (RTA) bus and rapid transit services and Ohio Rideshare carpooling services.
