GARFIELD HEIGHTS (Tuesday, June 18, 2013) – The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) District 12 is seeking public comments on the proposed plans to replace the Valley Parkway Bridge over I-77 in the City of Brecksville.
The bridge sustained damaged in early 2011 and one lane of two-way traffic has been maintained on the bridge since the incident. This project will return the bridge to two lanes of traffic, one in each direction, with a separate bridle trail on the south side.
Use of Federal funds subjects the proposed improvements to the requirements of Section 4(f) of the Department of Transportation (DOT) Act of 1966. This Federal law affords protection to publicly-owned parks, recreation areas, wildlife and waterfowl refuges, and public or privately owned historic sites.
The Cleveland Metroparks Brecksville Reservation is a recognized Section 4(f) property that will be impacted by the proposed project. Therefore, ODOT is required to seek public comment in order to proceed with project development.
To facilitate construction, Valley Parkway will be closed between Barr Road and Highland Drive during construction. The Cleveland Metroparks Bridle Trail will be closed during construction as well. Valley Parkway right-of-way that is currently part of the Brecksville Reservation will be used as a construction staging area for equipment. The Cleveland Metroparks will issue a construction permit to ODOT to allow the construction on Valley Parkway.
In addition to replacement of the Valley Parkway Bridge, the project will:
· Replace the bridle trail over the bridge and connection to the Cleveland Metroparks Bridle Trail on both sides of I-77.
· Widen the bridge deck to include a barrier to separate the roadway and the new bridle trail.
The estimated cost of the project will be approximately $2.3 million and is currently planned for construction in 2014.
