ODOT To Perform I-77 Southbound Closure Friday into Saturday
Major Downtown Event Traffic Should Not Be Impacted

GARFIELD HEIGHTS (Wednesday, August 24, 2011)Following a successful full closure of Interstate 77 northbound last weekend, the second full closure has been scheduled for this weekend to perform major paving operations in the southbound lanes.  The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Karvo Paving Company will close I-77 southbound between I-490 and I-480 in the cities of Cuyahoga Heights, Newburgh Heights and Cleveland on Friday, August 26 at midnight through 8 p.m. on Saturday, August 27.

The final surface course of asphalt will be placed in the right two lanes and berm on approximately three miles of I-77 southbound between Fleet Avenue and I-480.  The contractor will utilize two paving machines along with multiple roller machines and dump trucks to haul in the asphalt to complete the work.

Crews will close I-77 southbound at I-490 and all entrance ramps to I-77 southbound between I-490 and I-480.  Motorists will be detoured via I-490 westbound to SR 176 southbound to I-480 eastbound to access I-77.  Detours will be posted and law enforcement officers will assist in directing motorists.

Motorists traveling I-77 southbound following Friday and Saturday night’s Indians games should not be impacted by this work.

After a review of the city of Cleveland events calendar, it was determined by ODOT and Karvo Paving Company that these were preferable dates as they provide workable hours for a complete closure of I-77 southbound.
Crews will place the final surface course of asphalt on the right two lanes and berm.  Due to equipment scheduling needs of the contractor, final paving operations will be completed on the third lane at a later date.  Because of safety concerns, a full closure is needed to complete this weekend’s work.

ODOT will be utilizing the new Intelligent Transportation System dynamic message signs to notify and direct motorists around the construction throughout the weekend.  Motorists can view dynamic message signs, traffic cameras and traffic speeds at www.BuckeyeTraffic.org before they hit the road to see how traffic is flowing.

The $9.3 million project resurfaces I-77 north and southbound between I-490 and Rockside Road in the cities of Independence, Cuyahoga Heights, Newburgh Heights and Cleveland and is scheduled to be complete in October 2011.

All work is weather permitting and will be rescheduled if necessary.
