ODOT Lights-Up Dynamic Message Signs Along NE Ohio Interstates
Regional Intelligent Transportation System comes to  life in Northeast Ohio

Garfield Heights (Monday, November 22, 2010)Just in time for Thanksgiving travel, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) today activated the latest technology available to motorists.  Message boards will now give Cleveland motorists up-to-date driving information before they get behind the wheel and during their commutes.

The Intelligent Transportation System or “ITS” is designed to provide drivers with up-to-the-minute traffic information both before they leave home or work and on the roadway.  Now motorists can access online traffic cameras by the simple click of the mouse and view drive time messages on recently lit highway message boards and online at www.BuckeyeTraffic.org.

During the past several months, crews on behalf of the Department have been busy installing a series of traffic cameras, Dynamic Message Signs (DMS) and Highway Advisory Radios (HAR) around greater Cleveland.  Motorists will now see nine new DMS along Interstates and State Routes around greater Cleveland including: Interstate 90, Interstate 71, Interstate 77, Interstate 480, and State Route 2.

When complete, the entire Greater Cleveland region ITS system will include approximately 83 traffic cameras, 29 dynamic message boards, 26 vehicle detectors and seven highway advisory radios throughout Cuyahoga, Lorain, Medina, Summit, Portage and Lake Counties.

Motorists in the Akron/Canton region will also benefit from this new technology.  The new ITS system will include approximately 64 traffic cameras, 18 dynamic message boards, 18 vehicles detectors and two highway advisory radios throughout Medina, Summit, Portage and Stark Counties.

The $18.2 million ITS system is funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the entire project is scheduled to be complete in September 2011.  Only minor impacts to traffic are expected as part of the project.  The latest traffic information is available 24 hours a day at www.BuckeyeTraffic.org.

Digital Messaging Signs (DMS) are available for photo/video at the following locations: I-90 eastbound at Clague Road, I-90 westbound at Superior Avenue, I-90 westbound at Riverside Drive, I-480 eastbound at West 220th Street, I-480 eastbound at SR 94, I-480 westbound at SR 17, I-71 northbound at Denison Avenue, I-77 northbound at Fleet Avenue and State Route 2 at Newell Street.
