ODOT Postpones Temporary Weekend Innerbelt Closure
ODOT to confirm weight calculations overnight tonight with limited closure
Cleveland (Thursday, May 7, 2009) – In a continuing effort to confirm weight calculations for a unique procedure to realign the Interstate 90 Innerbelt Bridge, overnight tonight, Thursday, May 7, crews will temporarily restrict traffic from the bridge for a short time during the overnight hours between Thursday night and Friday morning.
Overnight tonight, crews will restrict traffic between approximately 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. in the eastbound direction and midnight and 6 a.m. in the westbound direction. Closures are not intended to impact Cavaliers game traffic. Motorists will be detoured via I-77 and I-490 during this limited, overnight closure.
In order to confirm weight calculations, crews have postponed this weekend’s work to realign the bridge. Work to lift and push the span four to five inches to the west in order to better align the bridge’s joints will be reschedule for a weekend later this month in coordination with downtown events. Details will be forthcoming.
Due to time restraints overnight Wednesday night, ODOT engineers were unable to confirm weight calculations for the portion of the span to be lifted and realigned. Overnight tonight, crews will again measure the weight of the bridge span and over the coming days will perform calculations necessary to perform the unique realignment.
This summer, as part of the Innerbelt Bridge Safety Plan, ODOT will invest $10 million in the Innerbelt Bridge to restore full use of the structure, including heavy truck traffic. In March, ODOT announced plans to construct a new $400 million westbound Innerbelt Bridge, utilizing federal transportation stimulus funds made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
