ODOT Set to Complete Innerbelt Bridge Realignment Project
Updated plan minimizes impact to Memorial Day weekend travelers

Cleveland (Monday, May 18, 2009) - In the latest phase of the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Innerbelt Bridge Safety Plan, crews will perform work to complete the unique realignment of the Interstate 90 Innerbelt Bridge into downtown Cleveland this Saturday, May 23.  The latest plan minimizes impacts to Memorial Day weekend travelers by limiting the full closure of the structure to only one, daytime closure.

As a way to prevent future stress to the bridge’s steel structure, crews will essentially lift and push the span between four and five inches to the west in order to better align the bridge’s joints. This allows the joints to adjust more freely as temperatures fluctuate, especially in the extreme heat of the summer and bitter cold of winter.

Prior to this weekend’s work crews will temporarily restrict traffic from the Innerbelt Bridge for a short timeframe during the overnight hours Monday, May 18, Tuesday, May 19 and Thursday, May 21 as engineers reinforce bridge members in preparation for this unique procedure.

This weekend, ODOT will again temporarily restrict traffic on the Innerbelt Bridge, detouring motorists via I-77 and I-490 during the limited weekend closure.  A complete rundown of upcoming closures is as follows:

Overnight Monday, May 18:
Crews will close the I-90 Innerbelt Bridge from approximately 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Overnight Tuesday, May 19:
Crews will close the I-90 Innerbelt Bridge from approximately 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Overnight Thursday, May 21:
Crews will close the I-90 Innerbelt Bridge from approximately 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Saturday, May 23*:
Crews will close the I-90 Innerbelt Bridge from approximately 1 a.m. to 4 p.m.

*Note: Should operations be prohibited on Saturday, May 23, closures will also be instituted on Sunday, May 24 during the same timeframe.

HELP TO Those Attending Marc’s Great American Rib Cook-Off on Saturday, May 23: Motorists will be detoured via I-77 and I-490.  The Interstate detour adds only an additional 1.5 miles to the route.  The detour will be well marked and police will assist motorists during this limited daytime closure.

The realignment is accomplished using hydraulic jacks to lift and push the span inches to the west, to reposition the bridge atop its piers. A similar procedure was done during the summer of 1999 and has become necessary again as the bridge has settled and shifted. ODOT engineers who performed the previous realignment will again manage this project.
