Investing in Northeast Ohio:
ODOT to Begin Construction on new Aetna Road Bridge
Garfield Heights, Ohio (Monday, May 10, 2010) – This week, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and Schirmer Construction Company of North Olmsted will begin preparations to demolish and reconstruct the Aetna Road bridge in Cleveland.
On or around June 1, 2010, crews will close the Aetna Road bridge between East 91st Street and East 82nd Street over the CSX Railroad in order to demolish the existing bridge and construct a new bridge. Motorists will be detoured via E. 78th Street, Union Avenue and E. 93rd Street. The bridge is expected to remain closed until the project is complete on or around June 30, 2011.
This week, motorists will notice signs at this construction site, announcing “Putting America to Work: Project Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.” Similar orange-and-green signs have been erected when work begins at stimulus-funded projects across Ohio.
As of the end of April, ODOT and its local partners have awarded contracts on more than 335 different stimulus-funded transportation construction projects worth more than $882 million, of which $557 million were funded by the stimulus. So far, 71 stimulus projects have been completed on Ohio's roadways and bridges, providing safer travel for Ohio's citizens and businesses.
Just as important as the number of projects is the number of paychecks these stimulus investments are helping to write. Since the start of the Recovery Act, workers on stimulus-funded transportation projects (both ODOT and locally administered projects) have logged more than 812,895 hours and earned more than $26.9 million.
