Investing in Northeast Ohio:
ODOT to Rehabilitate Willow Avenue Lift Bridge in Cleveland

Garfield Heights, Ohio (Friday, June 11, 2010)On Monday, June 14, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Ruhlin Company of Sharon Center will begin a project – funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act – to rehabilitate the Willow Avenue lift bridge over the Cuyahoga River in Cleveland.

Beginning Monday, crews will begin the rehabilitation process on the already restricted Willow Avenue lift bridge over the Cuyahoga River.  Vehicle traffic will be maintained with one lane of two-way operations utilizing temporary signals.  A 21-day river closure will take place in early 2011, however impacts to Cuyahoga River traffic will be minimal.  Work will take place Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.    The bridge is expected to remain restricted until the project is complete on or around June 30, 2011.

Motorists will notice signs at this construction site, announcing “Putting America to Work: Project Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.”  Similar orange-and-green signs have been erected when work begins at stimulus-funded projects across Ohio.

As of the June 1, 2010, ODOT and its local partners have awarded contracts on more than 368 stimulus-funded transportation construction projects worth more than $799 million. So far, 75 of those stimulus projects have been completed on Ohio's roadways and bridges, providing safer travel for Ohio's citizens and businesses.

Just as important as the number of projects is the number of paychecks these stimulus investments are helping to write. Since the start of the Recovery Act, workers on stimulus-funded transportation projects have clocked more than a million work hours on these jobs and have earned more than $33 million in paychecks. ODOT expects that number to more than double by the end of this summer.

All dates and times are approximate and weather dependent.  For statewide construction and road condition information visit www.BuckeyeTraffic.org.
