Phase III: State Route 2 Modernization Plan
Phase III State Route 2 Major Reconstruction To Begin Tonight

Garfield Heights, Ohio (Wednesday, July 14, 2010)Today, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and the Shelly Paving Company of  Twinsburg will begin Phase III of the $175 million Lake 2 Corridor Modernization Plan.

Phase III reconstructs and adds a lane along State Route 2 between State Route 306 and State Route 44 and includes the addition of an auxiliary lane between Heisley Road and State Route 44.  Noise barriers will also be constructed along portions of the north side of State Route 2.

Beginning overnight tonight and continuing until approximately July 28, crews will close one lane of State Route 2 eastbound between State Route 306 and State Route 615 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly in order to perform shoulder stabilization operations.  Beginning on, or around, July 19 crews will also close one lane of State Route 2 westbound between State Route 615 and State Route 306 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. nightly, in order to perform shoulder stabilization operations, through approximately August 2.

State Route 2 traffic will be maintained at all times, however additional lane and intermittent ramp closures are expected.  Details will be forthcoming.

The entire Phase III project is scheduled to be completed on, or around, October 15, 2012.

The State Route 2 Corridor was originally built during the 1960’s and designed for traffic volumes around 30,000 vehicles each day. Since that time, traffic volumes have more than doubled in the region. ODOT’s four-phase modernization plan is the first major upgrade to the roadway since that time.

The Lake 2 Corridor Modernization Plan and ODOT’s nearly $175 million investment will address substandard geometrics, noise and drainage issues as well as increase capacity in the region. This plan will modernize State Route 2 with a 35 year pavement design that will not require major maintenance for over two decades.

All dates and times are approximate and weather dependent.  For statewide construction and road condition information visit www.BuckeyeTraffic.org.
