Remaining I-90 Bridge over the Grand River Scheduled for Demolition
I-90 Twin Bridge Construction to be Completed in July 2010
Lake County (Friday, February 12, 2010) – During the early morning hours of Sunday, February 14 the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) and J. D. Williamson Construction Company Inc. will work to demolish the remaining two arches of the 1960’s-era westbound Interstate 90 bridge over the Grand River in rural Lake County. The middle arch over the Grand River was removed previously using mechanical methods in order to protect the Grand River below.
Due to safety concerns, public viewing of the demolition is strongly discouraged.
At approximately 8 a.m. on Sunday, February 14, I-90 east and westbound traffic will be slowed approaching the bridge utilizing a rolling road block as demolition of the structure takes place. Eastbound motorists who wish to avoid slowdowns may detour via SR 44 north to U.S. 20 east to SR 528 southbound. The westbound detour is reversed. Demolition is expected to be complete around 8:30 a.m.
The remaining bridge – built in the 1960’s – previously carried I-90 traffic westbound over the Grand River valley. The remaining two arches will be removed utilizing explosive demolition. A 1,500 foot perimeter will be set up around the blast zone. Demolition will be completed using the “Linear Shaped Charge” method, which essentially cuts through the steel as opposed to blowing pieces outward and away.
In September 2008, demolition experts demolished the remaining two arches of the 1960’s-era eastbound I-90 structure using the same method.
The original I-90 twin bridges each totaled approximately 864 feet in length and stood about 150 feet over the Grand River, making them some of the tallest in the region.
The new east and westbound twin structures were constructed as part of a $25.5 million replacement project. Both bridges are now complete and normal traffic patterns have resumed. Construction of the I-90 twin bridges over the Grand River began in March 2007 and is scheduled for completion in July 2010.
