The purpose of the U.S. 20 and McMackin Road intersection upgrade project is to improve safety. This intersection is one of the top crash locations in the state based on total crashes, average daily traffic volumes, change in crashes overtime and crash severity. The most common type of crash is the left turn crash, most often occurring when a vehicle eastbound on U.S. 20 attempts to turn left onto McMackin Road.
When vehicles are waiting to turn left in both directions, they block each other's view of on-coming traffic. A slight curve of the roadway in this location makes it even harder for drivers in the eastbound direction to see on-coming traffic in the outside lane. The proposed project would install a left-turn lane in each direction on U.S. 20, which would align the left-turners opposite each other, improving the visibility of on-coming traffic.
