GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES TRANSPORTATION ENHANCEMENT FUNDS

COLUMBUS - Governor Bob Taft today announced that 28 communities and organizations will receive more than $10 million in Surface Transportation Program funds to preserve historic transportation sites, scenically enhance local roadways, and add pedestrian and bicycle paths throughout Ohio.

"These funds to the local level provide more than just a facelift, they build pride in our communities, and by adding new recreation resources and preserving our history we are helping to attract visitors and businesses," said Taft. "This money is an investment in Ohio for all Ohioans."

Under the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21), passed by Congress in 1998, states are required to set aside at least 10 percent of their Surface Transportation Program funds for enhancement projects. The program was designed to creatively integrate transportation facilities into their surrounding communities and natural environment. Ohio's awards range from $4,200 to more than $1.7 million. More than $4 million is going to bicycle and pedestrian trails.

The Governor made the announcement at a noon event where he declared April 20 Ohio Trails and Greenways Day in Ohio. The event was sponsored by the Ohio Rails to Trails Conservancy, which works to increase trails and greenways by linking urban and suburban neighbors with existing parks and natural areas.
