HOLIDAY WEEKEND TRAFFIC UPDATE

COLUMBUS On the heels of ODOTs annual Construction Season Kickoff and National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week, motorists will see new road projects across the state as they travel this holiday weekend. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) strongly urges drivers to watch for construction delays and stopped traffic and to obey posted speed limits. ODOT works to open additional lanes of traffic or provide as many lanes as possible during peak hours and busy travel weekends like this one. Motorists can get up-to-date construction, road condition and travel information at any time at www.buckeyetraffic.org. To aid motorists, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) is providing this list of currently active road construction projects.

State Route 2 (Airport Highway), Lucas County
SR 2 is being widened between Reynolds and Byrne roads. One lane of traffic in each direction is being maintained with barriers. Completion date: October  2007.

State Route 2, Ottawa and Erie counties
Bridge deck replacement and widening of the Edison Bridge on SR 2 between Port Clinton and Bay View. A 10-foot width restriction is in place, and a wide load detour is posted at the Edison Bridge. SR 2 is restricted to one lane in each direction until May 2007. The speed limit on SR 2 through the work zone is 55 mph. Motorists may encounter delays in this area. Completion date: June 30, 2007.

State Route 53, Sandusky County
SR 53 is being widened to four lanes between North St. in Fremont and the Ohio Turnpike. One lane of traffic in each direction is maintained on SR 53. Motorists may encounter delays during peak travel times. Completion date: Sept. 7, 2007.

Interstate 280, Lucas County
Construction of the Veterans Glass City Skyway Bridge over the Maumee River on I-280. All lanes are open on I-280, with a 35 mph speed limit between Front St. and the Greenbelt Parkway within the construction zone. Completion date: June 2007.

State Route 8, Summit County
Reconstruction of SR 8, from south of Twinsburg Rd. to north of the I-271 interchange. A minimum of two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times on SR 8. The project includes the construction of five new bridges and the separation of SR 8 from Twinsburg Rd. SR 8 under I-271 has various lane restrictions from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Northbound SR 8 over Brandywine Creek has various lane restrictions from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily. Completion date: July 2010.

State Route 18, Medina County
Two separate sections of SR 18, between Windfall Rd. and Beach Rd., and  between Bambeck Rd. and the Medina/Summit County line, are reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction as part of a widening and reconstruction project. Completion date: June 2008.

U.S. Route 20, Lake County
Widening  and reconstruction project on U.S. 20 from the Mentor corporation line to Fern Dr. One lane of traffic in each direction is maintained on U.S. 20 at all times.  Nye Rd. is restricted to one-way traffic in the southbound direction only. Detours are posted.  Completion date: August 2008.

U.S. Route 20, Lake County
Resurfacing project on U.S. 20 between the Chagrin River and western Mentor corporation line. Traffic is maintained with one lane in each direction. Pelton Rd. between Mentor Ave. and Kirtland Rd. is closed permanently.  Detour is posted.  Completion date: August 2007.

U.S. Route 30, Stark County
U.S. 30 over the Tuscarawas River is reduced to one lane in each direction until fall 2007 for bridge reconstruction. The bridge is part of a larger project for the resurfacing and signing of the roadway from the Massillon west corporation limit to the Canton west corporation limit. Completion date (for the entire project): June 30, 2008.

Interstate 71, Medina County
Major reconstruction and widening of I-71, from one-half mile north of Leroy Rd. to three-quarters of a mile south of SR 3. Two lanes of traffic are being maintained in each direction. Completion date: July 2010.

Interstate 71, Medina County
Major reconstruction and widening of I-71 from SR 18 to I-76. Two lanes of traffic are being maintained in each direction. Completion date: Sept. 30, 2007.

Interstate 71, Medina County
Major reconstruction and widening of I-71 from one mile south of U.S. 224/I-76 to the Wayne County line. Two lanes of traffic are being maintained in each direction. Completion date: June 10, 2007.

Interstate 71, Richland County
Major reconstruction and widening of I-71, from three-quarters-of-a-mile south of the SR 97 interchange to the Morrow County line. Two lanes of traffic are being maintained in each direction. Completion date: May 31, 2007.

Interstate 76, Medina County
Major reconstruction and modifications to the I-76 and I-71 interchange. Two lanes of traffic are being maintained in each direction. Completion date: July 2010.

Interstate 77, Cuyahoga County
Replacement of the deck of the I-77 bridge over I-480. Crews will work to rebuild shoulders in the immediate area. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction. Motorists should use caution as the work causes lane shifts and shoulder closures.  Completion date: October 2008.

Interstate 77/Shuffel Road, Stark County
Shuffel Rd. over I-77 is closed for the construction of a new interchange with I-77 in Jackson Township. A detour is posted. Two lanes of traffic will be maintained in each direction on I-77. Completion date: Oct. 30, 2007.

Interstate 77, Stark County
Widening and reconstruction on I-77 from W. Tuscarawas St. (SR 172) to 13th St. Two lanes of traffic are maintained in each direction on I-77. The following are closed and detours are posted:

• The 4th St. bridge over I-77; and

• Both I-77 northbound entrance ramps from Tuscarawas St. The I-77 ramps are to remain closed until November 2007.

Completion date: June 2008.

Interstate 77, Summit County
The White Pond entrance ramp to northbound I-77 in the city of Akron is closed until mid-July, as part of a project to widen and reconstruct I-77 from SR 162 (Copley Rd.) to SR 21. Included in the project is the reconstruction of the Ridgewood Rd. and Brunsdorph Rd. bridges, and the off-ramp from I-77 northbound to SR 21 south. Detours are posted. Completion date: September 2008.

State Route 83, Medina County
SR 83, just north of Seville Rd. (TR 46) in Harrisville Township, is closed for a bridge replacement project. Detour is posted. Completion date: May 14, 2007.

State Route 84, Lake County
SR 84, in Willoughby Hills and Wickliffe, is reduced to one lane in each direction for widening.  Johnson Dr. is closed at Bishop Rd. through the beginning of May 2007. Detour is posted. Completion date: July 2008.

State Route 86, Lake County
SR 86 remains closed eastbound between Fay Rd. and SR 84 due to a slope failure. Crews have opened one lane of SR 86 in the westbound direction only. Detour is posted. Completion date: September 2007.

Interstate  90, Lake County
Rehabilitation of  I-90 between SR 306 and Morely Rd. An additional lane is being added to the roadway between SR 306 and SR 615. Lane widths are reduced and motorists should watch for traffic shifts. Completion date: June 2008.

Interstate 271, Summit County
I-271 over the Cuyahoga Valley National Park is reduced to one lane in each direction from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily for bridge reconstruction. Completion: October 2009.

U.S. Route 422, Mahoning County
The Covington St. bridge over U.S. 422 in the city of Youngstown is closed for utility work. The Belmont Ave. bridge over U.S. 422 is reduced to one lane in each direction. Detours are posted at both locations. Completion date: Sept. 30, 2007.

Interstate 480, Cuyahoga County
Rehabilitation of  I-480 from Tuxedo Ave. to the Valley View Bridge. Traffic is maintained in reduced width lanes. Please use caution as minor work takes place of the roadway. All ramps are currently open. Completion date: November 2008.

State Route 611, Lorain County
SR 611, between E. 21st St. and Colorado Ave. in the city of Lorain, has intermittent single lane closures for a bridge repair project. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained at all times. Completion date: Aug. 31, 2007.

Interstate 680, Mahoning County
Various lane restrictions in both directions on the Wellington Ave. Bridge over I-680 in the city of Youngstown in preparation for demolition work as part of a reconstruction and bridge painting project. Completion date: July 31, 2007.

U.S. Route 35, Montgomery County
Major repair and replacement of roadway and bridges, from I-75 to just east of the current Steve Whalen Blvd. exit. Two lanes of traffic are open in each direction. Traffic is shifted on U.S. 35. There are 10-foot, 6-inch lane width restrictions in place. The following ramps are closed within the work zone:

• Jefferson St. to eastbound U.S. 35;

• Keowee St. to eastbound U.S. 35;

• U.S. 35 eastbound to Perry St.;

• U.S. 35 eastbound to Jefferson St.; and

• Jefferson St. to U.S. 35 westbound.

Motorists should expect congestion and delays. Detours are posted. Completion date: spring 2008.

Interstate 70/Huber Heights, Montgomery County
Work continues on I-70 from the I-70/I-75 interchange to east of the Clark County line for the reconstruction and widening of I-70. Two lanes of traffic are maintained in each direction. Motorists should use caution and reduce their speed through this area. Expect congestion and possible delays. Completion date: July 2008.

Interstate 70/Interstate 75, Montgomery County
Reconstruction continues at the I-70/I-75 interchange just north of Dayton. Two lanes of traffic are maintained in each direction on I-70 through the interchange. I-75 is reduced to two lanes in each direction between U.S. 40 and just south of I-70. Motorists should use caution and reduce their speed through this area. Expect congestion and possible delays. Completion date: August 2009.

Interstate 75, Miami County
Replacement of bridge decks over CR 25A and the CSX railroad north of U.S. 36 in Piqua. Two lanes of traffic are maintained at all times in each direction. Motorists should use caution and reduce their speed through this area. Completion date: Sept. 28, 2007.

U.S. Route 23, Franklin County
Bridge replacement of the High St. bridge over the CSX and Norfolk Southern railroads. U.S. 23 is reduced to one lane of traffic in each direction between SR 104 and Hosack St. Completion date: July 2007.

Interstate 70, Clark and Madison counties
Widening and reconstruction of I-70 from U.S. 42 in Madison County to SR 54 in Clark County. I-70 westbound is completed and three lanes are open; I-70 eastbound is reduced to two lanes. The speed limit in the westbound lanes is 65 mph; in the eastbound lanes, the speed limit is reduced to 55 mph. Completion date: summer 2007.

Interstate 270, Franklin County
Major reconstruction of the I-71 and I-270 interchange on the north side of Columbus. All lanes are open. The width of the ramp from I-270 westbound to I-71 northbound is restricted to 13 feet. The speed limit on I-71 northbound is reduced to 55 mph. Completion date: September 2007.

Interstate 270/State Route 161, Franklin County
Major reconstruction of the SR 161 interchanges at I-270 and Sunbury Rd. on the northeast side of Columbus. SR 161 is reduced to two lanes in each direction between Little Turtle Way and SR 3, except for a short distance on the I-270 overpass, where only one lane is maintained in the eastbound direction. I-270 traffic is maintained with a minimum of three lanes in each direction between SR 3 and Easton Way. The speed limit is reduced to 55 mph on I-270 and 45 mph on SR 161. Motorists should expect delays and use caution in this area, as well as pay close attention to work zone signs. Traffic patterns, ramps and signals have changed recently. The ramp from SR 161 eastbound to I-270 northbound is closed through the summer of 2007. Detour is posted. Completion date: December 2007.

State Route 7, Jefferson County
Resurfacing almost five miles of SR 7, from the Belmont County line to just north of TR 155. One lane of traffic is being maintained in each direction. Completion date: September 2007. 

Interstate 70, Belmont County
Landslide repair just east of CR 214. The westbound truck climbing lane is closed. However, two lanes of traffic are being maintained in each direction. Completion date: September 2007.

Interstate 77, Tuscarawas County
Construction of a bridge over I-77 near Bolivar to link the Ohio & Erie Canal National Heritage Corridor from Cleveland to Zoar. No work will occur over the holiday. Completion date: July 2007.

Interstate 77, Guernsey County
Slip repair in northbound lanes just north of I-70. The northbound driving lane is closed and one lane of northbound traffic is maintained in the passing lane. Completion date: May 2007.

U.S. Route 22 and U.S. Route 3, Hamilton and Warren counties
Widening of Montgomery Rd. (U.S. 22 and U.S 3) from Cornell Rd. to Appleseed Rd. in Hamilton County to increase capacity and improve safety. One lane of traffic in each direction is being maintained. Completion date: October 2008.

State Route 28, Clermont County
Major reconstruction and widening of SR 28, from one-and-a-half miles east of I-275 to two miles west of SR 48. Work includes adding two-way left turn lanes and improving county road approaches to SR 28. One lane of traffic in each direction is being maintained. Completion date: Oct. 31, 2007.

U.S. Route 50, Hamilton County
Widening of U.S. 50, from Illinois Ave. to Mt. Echo Rd., to two lanes in each direction. Left turn lanes are being added at the major intersections. One lane of traffic in each direction will be maintained during construction. Completion date: August 2007.

U.S. Route 50, Hamilton County
Widening of U.S. 50 from just east of the Mariemont east corporation line to just east of Newton Rd. The work includes widening the existing pavement for a center turn lane, and lengthening the right turn lane approaching Newton Rd. One lane of traffic in each direction is being maintained.

Completion date: Sept. 30, 2007. 

State Route 73, Butler County
Bridge repair on SR 73 near the village of Seven Mile. One lane of two-way traffic is maintained by temporary signal. Completion date: July 2007.

State Route 133, Clermont County
Bridge repair on SR 133 near Hennings Mill Rd. One lane of two-way traffic maintained by temporary signal. Completion date: July 2007.

Interstate 275, Hamilton County
Rehabilitation of the roadway, pavement and 28 bridge structures on I-275 from just east of Winton Rd. to just east of U.S. 42. Work includes adding a fourth lane in both directions, widening the eastbound and westbound on and off ramps to Mosteller Rd., and replacing the bridge decks on the Chesterdale and U.S. 42 overpasses.  Three lanes of traffic maintained in each direction during peak travel hours. To maintain these three lanes, ODOT is shifting one lane of eastbound traffic onto the westbound side of I-275 to create an express lane through the work zone. Tractor trailers are prohibited in this lane, and there are no exits until the lane joins with mainline I-275. During the projects first phase, this lane carries eastbound traffic from just east of the Ohio 747 interchange to just east of U.S. 42. Completion date: October 2010.

State Route 320, Preble County
SR 320 is closed for culvert replacement one mile north of U.S. 40, inside the southern corporation limits of the village of New Paris. Detour is posted. Completion date: August 2007.

U.S. Route 35, Ross County
U.S. 35 is reduced to one, 10-foot lane in each direction for a resurfacing project from just west of the SR 104/High St. exit to the U.S. 23 interchange. A 50-mph speed limit is in effect. Motorists should watch for delays, especially between the High St. and Bridge St. exits. Completion date: Oct. 31, 2007.

U.S. Route 52, Lawrence County
Lane restrictions are in effect on U.S. 52 at the Ashland, Kentucky twin bridges near Coal Grove in conjunction with a bridge painting project by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. The 12th St. bridge (southbound lanes) to Ashland is closed, and two-way traffic is being diverted from U.S. 52 to the 13th St. bridge (northbound lanes). Motorists may encounter delays. Completion date: Nov. 1, 2007.

State Route 104, Pike County
SR 104 is reduced to one lane of two-way traffic near SR 552, south of Waverly. An 11-foot width restriction is in effect, and traffic is being maintained with the use of temporary traffic signals. (This is a project conducted by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources at the Lake White Dam.) Completion date: May 31, 2007.

State Route 140, Scioto County
A bridge replacement project on SR 140 at the CR 291 (Bloom Furnace Rd.) intersection, one mile east of South Webster. SR 140 traffic is being maintained in one lane with the use of temporary traffic signals. Bloom Furnace Rd. is closed at SR 140, and motorists are being detoured via Township Rd. 290 (Bloom Furnace Lane). Completion date: May 31, 2007. 

State Route 551, Pike County
SR 551 is closed at the Pee Pee Creek Bridge in the Lake White Region, just south of SR 220, due to damage incurred by flooding. The bridge is closed until further notice, and motorists are being detoured via SR 552.

State Route 770, Adams County
A slip repair project is under way on SR 770, one- half mile north of Township Rd. 411 (McCreight Rd.) Traffic is being maintained in one, 12-foot lane with the use of temporary traffic signals. Completion date: May 31, 2007.

Southeastern Ohio

State Route 124, Athens County
SR 124, just south of the Washington County line, is closed due to a significant slip. This is a permanent closure. SR 144 may be used as a detour until such time that a new state route is established.

State Route 124, Meigs County
SR 124, located just south of the Athens County line, has been closed for extensive slip repair. The full closure will be in effect for 70 days. Detour is posted. One lane of traffic will be opened beginning May 1. Completion date: July 2007.

State Route 147, Noble County
SR 147, three-and-one-half miles east of Batesville, has been reduced to one lane to allow for emergency slip repair. Two-way traffic is being maintained by the use of temporary signals. A 10-foot width restriction will be in place for the duration of the project. Completion date: June 30, 2007.
