MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND TRAFFIC UPDATE

COLUMBUS- (May 21, 2008) The Memorial Day weekend is the first major travel event of the summer, and with highway construction season in full swing and more vehicles expected on the roads, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) wants drivers to put safety first and be prepared when using the state’s roads and highways.

Last year, 2,124 highway crashes occurred during the Memorial Day weekend, which included 576 resulting in injuries, and 11 resulting in fatalities. Traffic increased most along rural interstate highways during the Friday before the 2007 holiday, when traffic levels rose more than 10 percent above the average Friday that May.

ODOT joins Governor Ted Strickland’s Highway Safety Office, the Ohio Department of Public Safety, the Ohio State Patrol and other highways safety partners in supporting “Click It or Ticket,” a national enforcement initiative running from May 19 to June 1 to remind drivers to buckle up day and night for safety.

Motorists can also be safer while traveling by finding out about highway construction projects and driving conditions from the www.BuckeyeTraffic.org web site before leaving home.

Where possible, ODOT opens additional lanes of traffic and requires contractors to maintain at least two lanes of traffic in each direction on Ohio’s interstates. To aid motorists, ODOT is providing this comprehensive list of major state construction projects.
