Ohio Traffic expected to rise for Friday Start of Labor Day Weekend

LABOR DAY WEEKEND TRAFFIC UPDATE

Slow for the Cone ZoneCOLUMBUS (Thursday, August 28, 2008) – Labor Day weekend traditionally marks the end of summer but not the end of construction season for the Ohio Department of Transportation. ODOT wants to remind drivers to stay alert, be patient and go Slow for the Cone Zone in order to ensure a safe holiday weekend.

In 2007, there were more than 2,000 crashes on Ohio highways from Friday through Labor Day Monday, with more than 600 crashes causing injuries and another 20 resulting in fatalities. Traffic volumes are typically at their highest on the Friday before the holiday, up more than 6 percent on Ohio’s rural highways and nearly 3 percent on urban highways in 2007.

With additional traffic on the roads and construction season still in full swing, travelers need to plan alternative routes or allow additional travel time to avoid congestion, delays or more serious highway incidents. Up-to-date traffic information can be found 24 hours a day at www.buckeyetraffic.org.

To aid motorists, ODOT is providing this comprehensive list of major state construction projects.
