ODOT urges Extra Care and Planning while taking Holiday Trips

ODOT End-of-Year Holidays Traffic Advisory

COLUMBUS (December 22, 2008) - The Christmas and New Year’s holidays are a reason to celebrate, and the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) wants everyone to be prepared and careful when traveling during these festive occasions.

Last year, there were 2,968 vehicle accidents on Ohio’s highways during the five-day Christmas holiday weekend; 662 collisions resulted in injuries and 11 crashes caused 14 fatalities. Then during the five-day New Year’s weekend, there were another 3,381 collisions; 748 crashes caused injuries and six crashes resulted in 10 fatalities.

No matter what your choice of transportation, ODOT reminds travelers that severe winter weather can arrive at any time. If you are driving, share the road with others responsibly, respect snowplows on the highway, and always remember:  in “Ice and Snow. . . Take it Slow.”

Also, know before you go: ODOT’s premiere website BuckeyeTraffic.org offers up-to-the-minute highway information on weather and road conditions, road closures, Highway Patrol accident updates and traffic congestion alerts; all available 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Here’s a comprehensive list of major highway construction projects in the state.
