ODOT Awards $14 million to Enhance

Statewide Urban Transit Operations

COLUMBUS (Wednesday, May 23, 2012) – Ohio’s urban transit systems will receive much-needed funding thanks to the Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) recent award of $14 million to 19 urban transit systems through its new Ohio Transit Preservation Partnership Program.

Under the new program, projects are competitively selected to receive federal monies to reach goals of maintaining and sustaining the transit systems in Ohio.

“The main focus of this new program is transit preservation,” said ODOT Director Jerry Wray. “Examples include replacing older buses for more fuel efficient vehicles and preventative maintenance activities that will extend the life of the transit vehicles.”

Central Ohio Transit Authority is receiving $2 million to modify its fueling facilities for Compressed Natural Gas fueling rather than diesel. This change is also being made to Akron’s Metro RTA and should have a significant impact on the air quality in both the Akron and Columbus areas.

Eligible applicants must be a public transit system operating in Ohio. These include Regional Transit Authorities, County Transit Boards, Municipalities, and County Boards of Commissioners.
