Slow for the Cone ZoneODOT urges Motorists to go
“Slow for the Cone Zone” This Coming Weekend

COLUMBUS - (April 9, 2009) - The Easter weekend marks the first major travel holiday of the year on the state’s roads and highways. The arrival of this year’s holiday coincides with the start of the Ohio Department of Transportation’s 2009 Construction Season, and National Work Zone Safety Awareness Week.

More work zones on our highways means greater potential for accidents: In 2008, there were 5,197 crashes occurring in work zones along Ohio’s highways, causing 1,780 injuries and 15 fatalities. ODOT reminds drivers that they can protect everyone’s safety by obeying reduced speed limits and paying attention to cones, signs, equipment, and highway workers in project zones.

There is no better way for drivers to reach their destinations safely than to know what they will encounter before they hit the highways. ODOT’s premiere website, www.BuckeyeTraffic.org, offers up-to-the-minute information on work zone locations, traffic congestion alerts, road closures, weather conditions, and Highway Patrol accident updates; all available 24-hours a day, seven days a week.

Here’s a comprehensive list of major highway construction projects in the state.
