Ready. Set. OPEN!

Columbus -  Two years after construction started on the largest ODOT project in Central Ohio, the I-71/670 Columbus Crossroads Project, there are signs, literally, that completion is near. By the middle of November, all highway travel movements, which includes every lane and bridge on I-71/670 will be open.

The scope of the Columbus Crossroads project includes 22 new bridges, more than 30 retaining walls and the start of two new city streets. All of which will increase capacity and improve safety on a highway that was built in the 1960’s.

This Monday marks the beginning of the end as two new traffic movements are opened. The biggest change will be the reconfiguration of the ramp from I-670 west to I-71 south. Drivers need to remember two things: Read and follow the signs.

Right now on the ramp, the left lane is the only lane that goes to I-71 south. The right lane drops at Cleveland Avenue. By Monday, the left lane becomes the exit to Cleveland Avenue, and the right lane is the only lane that goes to I-71 south.

That’s the reverse of what drivers have grown accustomed to doing. So motorists need to read the signs to pick the right lane and make the decision much earlier.

Drivers may also notice that once you get onto I-71 south, there is no more squiggle in the middle of your route. On Monday, drivers will be on the left two lanes and travelling on new, permanent pavement which is smooth and straight. Two lanes will still be maintained on I-71 south until November when all lanes are open.

The next big opening will be the longest and tallest bridge on the project which will carry two lanes of I-670 east traffic up and over I-71. That bridge is scheduled to open mid to late September.
