Welcome to the official Web site for information regarding proposed upgrades to the I-76/I-77 Central Interchange and the near West Leg in the city of Akron. The Ohio Department of Transportation, the city of Akron and the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study (AMATS) are working together to ensure the success of this important project.
Originally built in the early 1950s and 60s, the Central Interchange has become outdated and unable to efficiently manage the number of vehicles using the highway network. Traffic projections indicate that if improvements are not made, conditions will continue to deteriorate.
To improve safety, traffic flow and provide improved access to downtown Akron, many alternatives are being evaluated. Re-vamping such a congested, heavily-used highway in an urban area is a monumental task and one ODOT takes very seriously. Public involvement is a key component of this process. Input from motorists, residents and local officials is vital to ensuring that the project meets community needs while preserving its character.
Currently, funding is not available to move forward on this project. If and when the funding becomes available, ODOT will be seeking public input throughout the many phases of development, design and ultimately construction. I look forward to working with the community in our efforts to move ahead with this worthwhile project.
