Job creation is Gov. John R. Kasich’s top priority – and these transportation improvements are vital to that goalJob creation is a top priority for the Kasich Administration, and a modern, well-maintained transportation system is vital to achieving that goal. That’s why the governor was so alarmed when he came into office at a time when Ohio faced a $1.6 billion backlog in transportation projects, poor fiscal health, lower credit ratings and an overall shortfall in funding. As a result of the funding backlog, Ohio had been forced to push back—often by decades—some of the state’s largest, most pressing transportation construction projects. Gov. Kasich made it clear that Ohio must change the way we build our highways in response to these challenges. The result was his Ohio Jobs and Transportation Plan – and many of those long-delayed projects will be moving forward this spring.The key to this construction season: unlocking the revenue potential of the Ohio Turnpike through innovationGov. Kasich challenged ODOT to think outside the box, have the courage to change the status quo and take on the issues that had been kicked down the road for too long: like how to ODOT more efficient, how to reduce costs and how to leverage the value of the Ohio Turnpike. Thanks to the support of so many transportation advocates, we found creative approaches to funding that allowed ODOT to reduce its costs to free up resources for other needs, develop innovative ways to work with the private sector and leverage the Ohio Turnpike to help us improve our roadways.
