1. Specification:
711.23 C&MS
516.07 C&MS
2. Sampling and/or Inspection Requirements:
Certification - Supplement 1081
Elastomeric bearings shall be produced by a certified plant as per Supplement 1081. A list of certified suppliers and the material they produce is available at the OMM website
http://www.dot.state.oh.us/Divisions/ConstructionMgt/Materials/Pages/QPL.aspx
.
A TE-24 Shipping Notice must be received with the shipment. A bill of lading defining the components incorporated into the construction material item shall accompany the TE-24. If a TE-24 is not received, the material shall be rejected as not coming from a certified supplier.
All elastomeric bearings shall be inspected after delivery to the project for dimensions and condition. Dimensions shall be checked for compliance with the plan requirements.
Check condition of the neoprene for gouges and large sections missing. Check whether the number of internal laminates required in the design plans are actually in the bearing. Use of an ice pick or something similar pushed into the neoprene from the side can allow the inspector to feel the position an determine the number of internal shims. THIS IS CRITICAL TO THE BEARING'S PERFORMANCE
Check durometer of the neoprene bearings. All DET's have durometer gages. Bearings should be checked when the material is around 70 degrees. Bring a bearing into the project office. Check the gage is accurate by using the calibration block that comes with the gage. Take five (5) readings on the bearing. Average the readings. The bearing should be within the durometer range called for in the design plans by +/- 7 points. [example: 50 durometer bearing - average reading 43 to 57 use bearing] THIS IS CRITICAL TO THE BEARING'S PERFORMANCE.
Bearing Pads may be molded individually, cut from previously molded strips or slabs or extruded and cut to length. Laminated bearings shall be molded together into an integral unit with all edges of internal steel laminates covered by elastomer except at laminate restraining devices and around holes that will be entirely closed on the finished structure.
If there are questions on quality The Office of Materials Management should be contacted.
No sample required.
