About this Section EmployeesField Exploration Picture Gallery
About our Section:The Exploration and Laboratory Section consists of Geotechnical Drilling Crews, a Geotechnical Laboratory, and Geologists, under the supervision of Assistant Office Administrator Paul Painter.
The drilling crews explore the subsurface of proposed and existing ODOT roads and projects. They also install and monitor slope inclinometers in several of Ohio's geologically volatile areas. This information is vital in the design, construction, and maintenance of Ohio's roads. Our Geologists conduct in-situ testing in coordination with our drilling crews, install and monitor field instrumentation, perform geophysical explorations, and conduct CPT exploration with our CPT rig. The Section also maintains our fleet of drilling rigs and support vehicles.
The laboratory technicians test the samples collected by ODOT's Geotechnical Drilling Crews according to the Specifications for Geotechnical Explorations. The laboratory is certified by AASHTO re:source to conduct the full range of index, and undisturbed strength testing on soil samples. The data generated in this testing is used in design of roadways, structures, and geohazard remediations, and is included in Soil Profiles and Structure Foundation Explorations appended to ODOT Project Plans.
