Kaitlyn Maynard interned with the Ohio Department of Transportation, District 3, in Ashland, Ohio from May 2013 to XXXX, while working toward her degree in Communications from Kent State University. Here is her story:
What skills have you gained from working at ODOT?
I gained better communicaton, time management and networking skills.
What is the most surprising thing you've learned about ODOT?
The most surprising thing I have learned at ODOT is how close everyone is. ODOT is like an extended family, and everyone you meet is so nice and willing to help.
How have your education experiences helped you here at ODOT?
My educational experience has helped because it prepared me to tackle difficult challenges and find solutions quickly and effectively. My education also taught me to seek out answers and be helpful and responsive to others.
How have your experiences here at ODOT helped with your education?
My experience at ODOT has helped my education by teaching me about the real world. It's one thing to try and understand what a full-time job, your career job, will be like. But ODOT provided a smooth transition into my career right out of college. It wasn't difficult or hard.

What are your goals after graduation?
My goal was to gain full-time employment in a respectful position with benefits and decent pay. I did just that when I applied for the PIO position in District 3. I loved being the safety intern in the District, and my experiences in that department made me love ODOT even more, and now I plan to make a career out of my job.

What do you like to do in your spare time?
I enjoy spending time at Lake Erie boating and visiting Kelley's Island. I like to spend time with family and go on small weekend getaways. Yet, my favorite thing to do in my spare time is walk my dog with my husband and enjoy the outdoors.
