The department obtained from the Air Force a Beech AT-11 bombing trainer airplane, several Fairchild aerial cameras, and various photogrammetric and photolab equipment. By the end of 1946 the photogrammetric unit was fully equipped.



 
Our first plane, Beech AT-11, was originally used to train bombardiers in WW II. To convert it for photogrammetric use, bomb racks and bomb sights were removed and fuselage holes were cut to accommodate aerial cameras. Beech AT-11 had a glass nose, which provided outstanding visibility. The aerial camera was installed in a rubber mount in the nose floor. The rubber mount allowed the photographer to manually level the camera during the flight.
 
To take oblique pictures, the photographer had to climb out of the bombardier's seat to the back of the plane and shoot the photographs through a hole in the door panel. One of our first crews and its photographic equipment.
