Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices

Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices

The 11th edition of the National Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) was published on December 19, 2023 with an effective date of January 18, 2024.  Ohio is currently in a transition stage reviewing the new MUTCD content. Our future OMUTCD will consist of the Federal MUTCD and an Ohio Supplement with Ohio specific content.  For more information about this transition and new/changed traffic control devices that may be used during this transition period go to our Ohio Supplement to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices page.

The Ohio Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (OMUTCD) establishes statewide standards for the design and use of traffic control devices on any street, highway, bikeway or private roads open to public travel in Ohio. The current OMUTCD is the 2012 Edition published January 13, 2012, effective April 12, 2012.

The Ohio Revised Code (Section 4511.09) requires that ODOT adopt a manual for a uniform system of traffic control devices that conforms to the system approved by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). To this end, ODOT publishes the OMUTCD, which establishes standards for design and use of traffic control devices that conform to the national Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) published by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Section 4511.11 of the Ohio Revised Code requires that all local authorities in their respective jurisdictions, and owners of private property open to public travel, place and maintain traffic control devices in conformance with the OMUTCD.
